Inclusion Through Music: My DJ Mission

Inclusion Through Music: My DJ Mission

Ever since I can remember, music has been my escape. Growing up in a religious family, there was no room for self-expression. After years of struggle and heartache, I have finally come to accept myself as the man that I am. No matter what the changes in my life, the one constant thing has always been music. I am aware that there are many others who have experienced similar situations, which is why I want to create a space where people can celebrate their authentic selves.

The first time I attended the Pride parade in NYC was back in 1998. What stuck to me about that experience was the feeling of euphoria and unity across so many diverse groups and backgrounds. The “glue” of that unity was the music. Madonna’s “Ray of Light” was a huge hit that summer. The lyric, “And I feel like I just got home,” was both relevant and impactful at that moment.

I committed myself to DJ’ing to share this powerful feeling. Through music’s influence, I recognize the potential for using this art to create a safe space where people can come together and celebrate their unique selves.

As both a trans man and an ally, I am committed to championing inclusion through music for the LGBTQ+ community. Our society is quick to judge us for our differences and exclude us for not conforming to heteronormative ideals. At the end of the day, however, LGBTQ+ rights are human rights! Being equal doesn’t mean we are the same. It means we give each other the respect to be our authentic selves. My mission is simple. To create a space where we can dance together without fear. One step closer to listening to each other without fear.
